BIANCOSPINO

Hawthorn

(Crataegus oxyacantha - the wild species -
or Crataegus monogyna - the common species)

White hawthorn flower in close-up

(o Crataegus monogyna – la specie comune)

Hawthorn is a common shrub that grows spontaneously in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere (Europe, Asia, America).
In Italy it is widespread throughout the territory, especially in the undergrowth, on the edge of wooded areas and in tree-lined pastures. In addition to the plains, it can also be found in the mountains.
For centuries, hawthorn has been used to mark fields. Belonging to the Rosaceae family, its name derives from the Greek kràtaigos, a term that recalls the concept of "strength" . It features thorns and forms ornamental hedges with precious red berries that ripen in winter, displaying beautiful white flowers in spring.
Generally this is not a very tall tree: on average it reaches 3-5 meters. The hermaphrodite flowers appear between April and May to make room towards the end of summer for the fruits, which will remain available during the winter.

Hawthorn is a source of antioxidants (among which quercertin stands out), sterols and other compounds of interest to health.
Sedative action : the tannins and flavonoids contained in hawthorn act at the level of the central nervous system, making them useful especially for very nervous people, in which it reduces the state of tension , emotionality, and improves sleep.
Anti-radical action: hawthorn is able to trap free radicals by reducing the accumulation of cholesterol in the blood vessel wall, which tends to settle after being oxidized. In this way it hinders atherosclerosis.
Hawthorn is a plant used then for the circulatory system. It is a cardioprotective and an antioxidant.

Contraindications and Side Effects of Hawthorn
Like all herbs, medicinal plants and other natural remedies, hawthorn also contains active ingredients that can trigger side effects or interact with other herbal medicines, supplements or drugs.
Undesirable effects are rare and mainly concern stomach upset (e.g. nausea) especially in patients with gastritis and peptic ulcer. These disorders, however, cease by stopping the intake of hawthorn.
Furthermore, taking this herb can trigger headaches, migraines, dizziness, dizziness and palpitations.
From an analysis of the clinical studies in the literature it can be concluded that hawthorn is a safe remedy, at least as long as it is taken at doses between 160 mg and 1.8 g per day for a period of 3-24 weeks.
However, it should be used with caution if the heart rate is less than 60 beats per minute (bradycardia) and in disturbances in the conduction of the electrical stimulus in the heart.
It should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding and should not be given to children without first consulting your pediatrician.

CAMOMILLA

Chamomile
(Matricaria recutita)

(Matricaria recutita)

Close-up of a chamomile flower, white and yellow.

When we talk about chamomile we are actually referring to a series of plants of the Asteraceae family. The two most commonly used species are German chamomile (Marticaria recutita) and Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile). Both have been known since ancient times for their calming and anti-inflammatory properties, but the former is the one we all commonly use.
Chamomile has been known since the times of the ancient Egyptians who used it as a sedative but also to relieve headaches, rheumatism and against fever. But the popularity of this plant was also great in the Greek civilization, in the Roman one and then in the Middle Ages when its use as a natural remedy of popular use became even more frequent.

Chamomile is a plant with great sedative and calming properties , useful for counteracting the hypoglycemic effects in case of diabetes. It has antispasmodic, muscle relaxant and protective properties. In case of anxiety it can relax the nervous system. When used together with lemon balm, chamomile helps the stomach relax and eliminate abdominal cramps.
With chamomile flowers, infusions are prepared that are notoriously used for their mildly sedative virtues. In reality, the plant does not have hypno-inducing active ingredients, like most of the officinal herbs that are used against insomnia, but on the contrary it has mainly antispasmodic properties such as lemon balm, that is, it produces muscle relaxation due to the presence of flavonoids in its phytocomplex ( eupatuletin and quercimethrin) and coumarins.

Contraindications and Side Effects of Chamomile
The intake and use of chamomile has no particular contraindications. The only side effects that can occur are linked to any allergic reactions due to the presence of sesquiterpene lactones in the plant.
There are those who do not recommend it during pregnancy as it could cause premature contractions; nevertheless, the dose to be taken to get to be in this situation should however be very high, so even when pregnant, many women choose to use this drink sporadically to promote relaxation.

The molecules that have made this plant known since ancient Greece are: alkaloids, valerine and catenin, isovaleric ester, valeranone ethers and valenerone.
The sedative virtues for which valerian is best known are mainly linked to the presence of these last two molecules. It is precisely this chemical mix that gives valerian those properties that make it unique in the field of sedative and relaxing supplements. It is in fact often recommended in case of agitation and insomnia.
Its action manifests itself directly on the central nervous system and makes it possible for it to be used for an enormous number of purposes, more or less all connected with its vasodilating action such as to allow blood pressure to be regulated. This allows it to mitigate states of anxiety , digestive difficulties, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the stomach and of the first part of the intestine (duodenum) and of the last (colon), topical inflammations such as erythema or acne.
It also possesses sedative hypno-inducing relaxing properties that induce sleep and is also useful for headaches from fatigue and severe neuralgia.

Contraindications and Side Effects of Valerian
Although it has very little acute toxicity, the excessive and / or excessively prolonged use of valerian can cause some side effects such as migraine, insomnia, excitability, bradycardia (decreased heart rate), increased blood pressure.

Verbena, also known as herb of grace or St. John's wort (not to be confused with Hypericum perforatum), is a plant with multiple health-promoting properties. Native to temperate regions of Europe and Asia, Verbena has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its wide range of therapeutic applications.
